Herbal Medicine for Hay Fever & Allergic Rhinitis
Hay fever affects around 1 in 4 UK adults. Antihistamines help but can cause drowsiness and tolerance. Herbal medicine offers an evidence-based alternative — calming histamine response, modulating Th2 immune patterns, and reducing reactivity over time rather than masking symptoms.
01 · The practice
Persistent fatigue and recurrent infections share the same roots.
Best results come from starting a herbal protocol 8–12 weeks before your typical hay-fever season. This allows immune-modulating herbs to recalibrate Th1/Th2 balance before allergen exposure peaks.

If you have an autoimmune condition or take immunosuppressants, only use these herbs under the guidance of a registered herbalist who is coordinating with your specialist.
05 · Frequently asked
Questions about energy and immune support.
Does herbal medicine work as well as antihistamines?
For many patients, yes — butterbur Ze 339 has RCT evidence showing comparable efficacy to cetirizine, without drowsiness. Results vary by individual.
When should I start?
Ideally 8–12 weeks before your usual hay-fever season. Beginning during peak symptoms still helps but is less effective than prevention.
Is butterbur safe?
Only PA-free (pyrrolizidine-alkaloid-free) preparations should be used. Your herbalist will only prescribe certified PA-free butterbur. Avoid in pregnancy.
Can I book online from anywhere in the UK?
Yes — consultations are offered by video and home visits are available in selected areas.
