Herbal Medicine for Depression & Low Mood

Depression affects 1 in 4 people in the UK at some point in their lives. Herbal medicine offers a multi-pathway approach to low mood — addressing serotonin, dopamine, inflammation, HPA axis function and nutritional deficiencies that conventional antidepressants do not fully address.

01 · The practice

The mind and body are one system — your protocol respects that.

Uplifting herbal medicine for mood support

Depression is not simply a serotonin deficiency. Current research highlights neuroinflammation, HPA axis dysregulation, gut microbiome imbalances (the gut–brain axis), mitochondrial dysfunction, and specific nutritional deficiencies (B12, folate, D3, omega-3) as key contributors. Herbal medicine addresses this complexity.

“Herbal medicine has been practiced for over 5,000 years across every continent.”

02 · How it works

How herbal medicine supports the nervous system.

01

Neurotransmitter Support

Serotonergic and dopaminergic herbs address the neurochemical imbalances underlying low mood.

02

Neuroinflammation

Anti-inflammatory herbs reduce the brain inflammation increasingly linked to depression.

03

Gut–Brain Axis

Healing gut dysbiosis improves serotonin production — 95% of which is made in the gut.

04

Adrenal & HPA Support

Adaptogenic herbs restore the cortisol rhythm disrupted in chronic depression.

Safety note

Several nervine herbs interact with prescription medication. St John’s Wort dramatically reduces the effectiveness of SSRIs, contraceptives, warfarin and many other drugs. Valerian, passiflora and hops can amplify sedatives. Never combine these with mental-health medication without working with a registered herbalist who can adjust doses and timing, and always tell your GP and prescribing psychiatrist about herbal treatment.

05 · Frequently asked

Questions about herbal mental-wellbeing support.

Can I use herbs alongside antidepressants?

St John’s Wort has significant interactions with SSRIs and must not be combined. Other herbs may be suitable — your herbalist will advise.

How does herbal medicine compare to SSRIs?

St John’s Wort is clinically comparable to SSRIs for mild-to-moderate depression. Herbal medicine also addresses root causes SSRIs do not.

Is this safe for severe depression?

Severe or suicidal depression requires medical supervision. Herbal medicine is best used for mild-to-moderate presentations or alongside psychiatric treatment.

How long before my mood improves?

Most herbs for depression take 4–6 weeks to show full effect, similar to antidepressants.
