Herbal Medicine for Acne

Adult acne affects up to 1 in 5 UK adults — and it is increasing. Herbal medicine offers a multi-pathway approach: balancing hormones that drive sebum production, reducing inflammation, restoring gut microbiome health, and supporting liver detoxification of androgens.

01 · The practice

Stubborn skin almost always reflects deeper imbalance.

Adult acne is rarely just about skincare. Common drivers include hormonal imbalances (PCOS, androgen excess), insulin resistance, gut dysbiosis, chronic inflammation, stress and impaired liver detoxification.

“Plant compounds often work synergistically — combinations can be safer than isolated molecules.”

Some skin herbs (St John’s Wort, Calendula, certain photosensitisers) can increase sun sensitivity. Burdock and Yellow dock are not suitable in pregnancy. Always work with a registered herbalist if you have a flare-up while on isotretinoin, immunosuppressants or biologics — and always tell your dermatologist about any herbal treatment.

05 · Frequently asked

Questions about herbal skin support.

How long until I see clearer skin?

Most patients notice improvement within 8–12 weeks. Hormonal acne can take 3 cycles to settle.

Can herbal medicine replace Roaccutane (isotretinoin)?

For moderate acne, yes — many patients achieve clear skin without isotretinoin. Severe nodulocystic acne may still benefit from referral to dermatology.

How are PAEAN practitioners qualified?
