Herbal Medicine for PCOS | Natural Hormone Balance

Herbal medicine for PCOS — natural hormone balance consultation

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) affects an estimated 1 in 10 women in the UK. Herbal medicine offers a personalised, root-cause approach — addressing insulin resistance, hormonal imbalance, ovulation and inflammation rather than masking individual symptoms.

How Herbal Medicine Supports PCOS

A qualified herbalist takes a detailed assessment of your cycle, metabolic health, hormone picture, stress levels and family history. Your bespoke formula is built to address the underlying drivers of your PCOS — not just one symptom at a time.

  • Insulin sensitivity — Cinnamon, berberine and gymnema improve insulin response, which often drives PCOS symptoms.
  • Hormonal balance — Vitex (chasteberry), peony and licorice support ovulation, lutealisation and androgen regulation.
  • Inflammation — Turmeric and Boswellia reduce the low-grade inflammation associated with PCOS.
  • Stress & cortisol — Adaptogens (ashwagandha, rhodiola) regulate the HPA axis, often disrupted in PCOS.

Conditions and Symptoms We Support

  • Irregular or absent periods
  • Acne and hirsutism (excess hair)
  • Weight gain and insulin resistance
  • Fertility challenges related to PCOS
  • Mood, fatigue and sleep disruption

What to Expect

Your initial consultation typically lasts 60–90 minutes. Your herbalist will take a full health history, review your cycle, diet, sleep and stress patterns, identify the root drivers of your PCOS, and prepare a personalised herbal formula. Follow-up appointments track your progress and refine your prescription.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long before I see results?

Most women notice cycle regulation and symptom improvement within 3 cycles (≈3 months). Insulin and androgen markers shift over 4–6 months.

Can I take herbs alongside metformin or hormonal contraception?

In most cases, yes — your herbalist reviews all medications and checks for interactions before prescribing.

Will I need to change my diet?

Dietary changes are central to PCOS recovery. Your herbalist will provide tailored guidance alongside your herbal formula.

Is this suitable if I’m trying to conceive?

Yes — herbal medicine can support ovulation and cycle regularity. Your herbalist will tailor herbs to your fertility goals.

FAQs

Frequently asked

Can herbal medicine help PCOS symptoms?

Yes, and the evidence is strongest for three areas: insulin sensitivity (cinnamon, berberine, gymnema), androgen-driven symptoms like acne and hirsutism (spearmint tea, saw palmetto, peony-and-licorice), and cycle regulation (vitex / chaste tree). Most PCOS plans combine herbs with diet and lifestyle support — PCOS is metabolic at its core and the diet inputs do at least half the work. Expect a 90-day course to see meaningful cycle and skin changes.

Can I take herbal medicine alongside metformin or the pill?

Yes. Our herbalists routinely prescribe alongside metformin (the herbs complement it on insulin sensitivity) and alongside the combined or progestogen-only pill. The interactions are well understood and your prescription will be tailored around your current medication. If you’re trying to conceive, that changes the prescription substantially — let your herbalist know.

How quickly will I see results?

Skin and energy often shift within 4-6 weeks. Cycle regulation typically takes a full 3 cycles, since the ovary needs time to respond. Hair changes (regrowth where it’s been lost, reduction where there’s excess) are the slowest and usually need 6-12 months of consistent treatment. We book a 4-week follow-up and a 12-week review to track progress.

Is herbal medicine for PCOS safe in pregnancy?

Several PCOS herbs (vitex in particular, plus saw palmetto and peony-licorice) are not advised once you’re pregnant. If you’re trying to conceive, your herbalist will switch to a pregnancy-safe protocol once you have a positive test, and stop the cycle-regulating herbs immediately. We coordinate with your GP and any fertility consultant.

Does the approach differ for lean PCOS vs insulin-resistance PCOS?

Yes — significantly. Insulin-resistance PCOS (the more common pattern, often with weight gain and acanthosis nigricans) responds best to berberine, cinnamon and gymnema alongside a lower-carbohydrate eating pattern. Lean PCOS (where weight is normal but androgens and stress are high) responds differently: the focus is on adrenal-axis support (ashwagandha, rhodiola, licorice) and adequate carbohydrate intake — under-eating in lean PCOS often makes it worse. The two patterns share the cycle-regulating herbs but the metabolic and adrenal work is genuinely different. The consultation works out which one you’re dealing with first.
