Chinese Herbal Medicine for IBS
Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM) is one of the most extensively researched complementary therapies for IBS — with a landmark JAMA RCT in 1998 first demonstrating its efficacy. Today, CHM offers a deeply individualised, evidence-supported approach to IBS that has stood the test of time and modern clinical research.
01 · The practice
Why most gut symptoms rarely have a single cause.
Traditional Chinese Medicine sees IBS as a pattern of disharmony — most commonly involving Liver-Spleen disharmony, Spleen Qi deficiency, or damp-heat. Treatment is individualised to your specific pattern.

“Roughly 25% of modern prescription drugs derive from plant sources first identified traditionally.”

Safety note
Some gut-supporting herbs interact with medication — peppermint oil can reduce absorption of iron and certain heart medications, liquorice raises blood pressure in long courses, and DGL is a safer alternative for reflux. Always work with a registered herbalist if you take PPIs, anticoagulants or anti-hypertensives, and tell your GP about any treatment.
